i am half assedly trying to find barbs that were traded between steve malkmus and billy corgan.
okay here are some
underfoot
this sort of doesn't fit the criteria?
malkmus called the smashing pumpkins "the pumpkies."
these don't really give that much information about trading barbs in the 90s.

I remember Malkmus had just quit Oasis and he showed signs of quaalude withdrawal. The show and the band were utter shit, but the Malk laconically explained his appearance (and maybe the sound?) blaming "[inaudable] dirty tricks again" and revealing what appeared to be a swollen scorpion sting on his tongue. He had yet to proceed into the most notorious performance of them all. By the start of the encore, we all felt an Altamontian air, which the band decided to escalate by pushing hard into the legendary Pumpkins tune, 1979, which they performed warts and all. When Steve's heart's on his sleeve, the crowd goes wild, except for one scowling curmudgeon who looked too busy to enjoy himself. Malk was so disturbed he had to stop mid-song. "Sorry, but Billy Corgan's in the back taking notes." Looking up from his notepad, the man had time to scream about "so much buncumb" suggesting "power has driven Stephen raving mad!" It was sad to see the crowd (including me) beat the shit out of a guy who probably didn't even deserve it.
I don't think Stephen Malkmus talks about this show much, but I'm sure it's in his unpublished, probably unpublishable, possibly unwritable autobiography. He seemed to have some regrets, remarking, "occasionally directing a crowd's energy against a single member can lead to some spectacular cock-up, but most things that are worthwhile require a risk. Plus, I trust and respect my fans; I'm not Avril Lavigne.
thank you. sounds accurate.
